Interfacing is a stiff material sewn inside the collar to provide structure. If the interfacing is cut too small, is too lightweight, or is improperly attached, the outer fabric will inevitably pull and curl upwards. Another major culprit is the drying process; hanging a damp shirt to dry allows gravity and moisture to weigh the collar down, often setting a permanent bend.
The Role of Interfacing
Interfacing acts as the skeleton of a collar. When selecting or replacing interfacing, the weight must match the fabric. A medium-weight cotton shirt requires a medium-weight fusible or sew-in interfacing. If the interfacing is too heavy, it can cause stiffness and discomfort; if too light, it offers insufficient support to prevent the collar from rolling. Proper alignment of the interfacing edges is also critical, as any overhang will eventually bubble and distort the collar's line.
Washing and Drying Techniques
How you launder a shirt has a direct impact on collar posture. Aggressive tumbling and high heat can damage the fibers and set wrinkles into the collar curve. To mitigate this, always fasten the top button before washing to keep the collar placket aligned. This simple step prevents the fabric from stretching out of shape and keeps the edges aligned during the wash cycle.

Instead, lay the shirt flat on a drying rack, ensuring the collar is smoothed into its natural, straight position.

The Ironing and Steaming Process
Heat is the final tool required to lock in the straight alignment of the collar. However, applying heat to a wrinkled collar without preparation can lead to uneven results. Always ensure the collar is completely dry before touching it with heat, as steam applied to a damp collar can set water stains.
When ironing, start from the underside of the collar to set the interfacing. Then, gently press the top side using a spray bottle for steam. The key is to use the tip of the iron to press along the collar band, moving from the edges toward the center. This method eliminates air pockets and ensures the collar lays flush against the shirt front.
Storage and Long-Term Maintenance
Even after achieving a perfectly straight collar, improper storage can undo all your efforts. Hanging a dress shirt immediately after wearing it, especially while the fabric is still warm, can cause the collar to retain the shape of the wearer's neck. To preserve the structure, hang the shirt on a wide, contoured hanger that supports the shoulders without stretching the fabric.
